Our clients David and Alison McKay of Bowraville NSW are the proud parents of the 2015 Masterchef Australia winner, Billie McKay. We asked them some questions about how it all began and their experience on the show…
Did you always know that Billie was an aspiring chef?
Not an aspiring chef but Billie was always fond of cooking, she had a really artistic flair with food and would always make something look nice on a plate.
Who did Billie learn her cooking skills from?
Billie learnt the basics from cooking in the kitchen as a kid with mum. To get where she is now, she got a lot of inspiration from working as a waitress and being around chefs, observing their techniques, the dishes they would cook and their presentation on the plate. Billie also loved reading recipe books and trying out different recipes at home.
What’s your families’ favourite dish?
Beef wellington is a new found favourite. We actually saw this on and episode of Masterchef a few years ago, the kids had a go at making it and it’s been a favourite ever since. We make it with home grown beef and it has beautiful puff pastry around the outside, it’s delicious!
What was it like for you and David being involved in the production of Masterchef?
We were really proud to be there and very nervously watching on as Billie was busy cooking away. We are just a couple of dairy farmers from Bowraville so being in a big studio in Melbourne watching it all unfold was really exciting.
