ATO credit card payments to end from 1 December 2026
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has announced it will stop accepting credit card payments after 30 November 2026.
The decision follows the Reserve Bank of Australia’s review of card payment costs and surcharging. The ATO says it would not be appropriate to pass the cost of credit card merchant fees on to the community.
Other payment options will remain available, and are listed here: Other payment options | Australian Taxation Office
Payment Plans:
If you have a current payment plan with the ATO and the payment is linked to a credit card, you will need to change your payment method before 30 November 2026. Credit card payments after that date will fail, potentially putting your plan into arrears or default.
If you rely on a credit card to manage tax payments, now is a good time to review your cash flow and prepare for the change.
Contact HQB if you need assistance reviewing your ATO payment arrangements or planning for upcoming tax obligations.
