Seventy Years Strong: Celebrating the Journey of HQB

July marks a remarkable milestone for HQB Accountants Auditors Advisors, as we celebrate 70 years of continuous service, growth, and commitment to the Coffs Coast and surrounding communities.

Whilst the firm’s name has evolved over the decades, the HQB identity—originally representing Hogbin, Quinn, and Bentley; three partners who came together in 1975—has long been recognised and respected throughout the community. The “H” in HQB pays tribute to Allen Hogbin, the firm’s founder and a respected pioneer in the local accounting community. Allen’s vision and values laid the foundation for HQB’s enduring success. Beyond his professional achievements, Allen was deeply committed to our community. He was actively involved in Rotary, local Chamber of Commerce, sponsored the Bunker Cartoon Gallery, and championed local arts and education through his support of the Conservatorium, just to name a few. His generosity extended to funding vital community infrastructure, including the Coffs Harbour Pool and the local running track—leaving a lasting legacy of civic engagement and goodwill.

His son, Ian Hogbin, joined the firm in 1985 and has played a pivotal role in its evolution ever since. This year, alongside HQB’s 70th anniversary, Ian celebrates 40 years of service—an extraordinary milestone that reflects his dedication, leadership, and the continued strength of the Hogbin legacy. Ian has also demonstrated a deep commitment to the wider Coffs Harbour community. He served as a Coffs Harbour City Councillor, contributed his expertise as a board member of the Coffs International Stadium and Bishop Druitt College, and was actively involved in the Coffs Harbour Think Tank—helping to guide the region’s long-term vision and development. His leadership echoes the values established by his father, reinforcing HQB’s enduring connection to the community it serves.

Today, HQB is proud to have five partners at the helm—Ian Hogbin, James Davis, Brad Sheaves, Catherine Stojcevska, and David Gorman, marking the largest and most diverse leadership team in the firm’s history. Each partner brings a unique blend of experience, insight, and client focus, strengthening HQB’s ability to serve a wide range of individuals and businesses. This collaborative leadership approach ensures the firm remains agile, forward-thinking, and well-positioned for continued success.

Behind HQB’s longevity and success is a dedicated team of 35+ professionals. Among them are 13 fully qualified Chartered Accountants (CAs) and Certified Practising Accountants (CPAs). A further 5 team members are currently undertaking their CA or CPA studies, demonstrating HQB’s strong culture of professional development and progression. This skilled and growing team enables HQB to provide tailored, high-quality advice while nurturing the next generation of accounting talent through mentorship and continuous learning.

HQB is proud to be the largest locally owned and operated accounting firm in Coffs Harbour, with the longest continuous presence in the city. This standing reflects not only the firm’s scale and capability, but also the depth of its connection to the Mid North Coast over many decades. HQB’s influence reaches beyond business, shaped by consistent engagement with the wider community through local networks such as the Rotary Club, Coffs Harbour Chamber of Commerce, the Business Women’s Network, and other professional groups. The firm’s involvement in community-life spans a wide range of causes, events, and initiatives that highlight the region’s energy and resilience. Over the years, team members have taken part in events such as the CanDo Cancer Trust Swim, the Coffs Running Festival, the Australia Day Fun Run, the Bellingen Show, the Coffs Triathlon, and the C.ex Community Sleep Out, among others. HQB has also supported organisations including but not limited to the Uniting Church, Bellingen Youth Orchestra, Lifeline, Mission Australia, and Friends of the Coffs Gallery. The team have contributed to numerous charity golf days that raise vital funds for community projects and occasional sponsorships, like supporting a yacht in the Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Yacht Race.

Members of the HQB team have enthusiastically taken part in a variety of endurance events that challenge both individual resilience and collective spirit. From the physically demanding JLW Challenge, Kokoda Challenge, and Kokoda Trek to local grassroots events like the Backyard Ultra and other trail runs hosted by Coffs Trail Runners. Our team continue to embrace opportunities that push them beyond their limits. These experiences go beyond fitness—they cultivate camaraderie, perseverance, and a strong sense of purpose. By stepping outside their comfort zones and rallying around meaningful causes, team members demonstrate a commitment to personal growth, teamwork, and community connection.

As HQB celebrates 70 years of service, the firm remains deeply proud of its history—and even more excited about the road ahead. Backed by a dedicated team, strong leadership, and lasting community ties, HQB looks forward to continuing its legacy of trusted advice, personalised service, and meaningful impact for many years to come.
